Slavic
Languages Factoids
Did
you know that a Slavic language (Russian) was the first
to be spoken by human beings in space?
The Slavic languages (also called Slavonic),
are a group of closely related tongues of the Slavic
peoples (some 400 million speakers worldwide), and are
used in most of Eastern Europe, the Balkans, parts of
Central Europe, and the northern part of Asia.
The
oldest written Slavic language is Bulgarian (some 9
million speakers), from which the distinct Cyrillic
alphabet originates. The most widespread of all Slavic
languages is Russian (some 300 million speakers).
Russian is also the most popular language in the world
in terms of ethnic diversity—more than 150 ethnic
groups use it. In today’s world there are 25 sovereign
countries in which a Slavic language is spoken.
Scholars identify 3 main subgroups of the Slavic
linguistic family:
West
Slavic: Polish, Czechoslovakian
South
Slavic: Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian, Slovenian, Macedonian
East
