PaHoua Ly - Southeast Asian Languages

My family moved to Thailand in 1975 after fleeing the war in Laos. We lived in a refugee settlement there for a couple of years. My first experience with languages was with Hmong, which my parents spoke to me. In 1977, my family moved to Bordeaux, France, and it was there that I got hooked on languages and culture. French became my primary language as I went through elementary and high school.

In 1993, before I could finish high school in France, my family relocated to the United States. I finished high school in Wisconsin after entering as a senior, and later continued my education at a Wisconsin college. Languages came easy to me and I sought to put this innate ability to use by becoming an interpreter.

My taste for American culture continued through new friends, the media and from a lot of reading (a passion of mine). As a mom and wife in the Hmong community, I see the need for qualified interpreters who understand the Hmong culture, and who can act as culture brokers as well as excellent interpreters.

We are devoted to understanding cultures within local communities by having bilinguals like me to interface with people who can not communicate effectively. All medical information is confidential, and we abide by HIPAA regulations. Our court interpreters follow certification procedures.

The Hmong culture is changing in America. The younger generation is drifting from the older generation, and new challenges are put in front of interpreters.  My Hmong ethnic background is something I am very proud of, and I strive to know more in order to help my community at a local level.

You will not be disappointed with the quality of services we offer. Customers like you demonstrate the desire of local communities to learn more about diverse cultures within their own and it is a great first step toward cultural awareness.
