Carvallo - Spanish and Romance Languages
At
the age of 6 my parents enrolled me in a British
institute in Uruguay, they did not know that by
insisting that I learn English they were not only giving
me another tool for life, but also a career. In 1991, I
received my English Degree from Cambridge University.
I
grew up bilingual. Later in life, being a linguist also
helped me in my endeavors of becoming an architect in my
native Uruguay. It was priceless to read textbooks in
English instead of relying on poorly translated versions
or waiting for the Spanish editions to come in.
I
started my journey as an interpreter after applying with
International Translators from my country. I saw the
need for interpreters to help Spanish speakers and I
jumped at the opportunity. When I obtained
employment with International Translators and came to
the USA, I discovered that bilingual professionals were
in short supply.
My
organization abides by and promotes national codes of
conduct for interpreters and translators. We actively
participate at a regional and national level to advance
the goals of language organizations like ours by
sponsoring interpreter and translator conferences.
Coordinating
not only Spanish interpreters but for most other romance
languages is something I enjoy doing. I know that
interacting as an interpreter in an assertive manner is
the key, and following a code of ethics is a must.
Like
all professions, ours is a never ending process of
feedback and learning. We hire medical interpreters that
are caring and have a sense of empathy. I invite you to
join us in this process, as an interpreter or as a
customer.
